Dreaming of F.R.S.
Lake Como is the spiritual, and actual, home of Francesca Ruffini Stoppani’s monogram-inspired lingerie business F.R.S., or “For Restless Sleepers.” On its shores the first European silk production took place. And here Ruffini grew up and attended Como’s unique high school dedicated to fabric design. The elegance and subtlety of her lakeside world combines with her love of flowing silk garments, especially pajamas, to create the sophisticated F.R.S. sleepwear that can be worn all day. This spring, Jane’s Vanity shares the pajama attitude by offering these lovely and versatile designs.
Ruffini loves to dance. The freedom it provides is translated into her festive pajama-inspired pieces. And her love of books provides inspiration as diverse as Navajo textiles and vintage Tiffany jewelry. Her library is always the starting place for her work. The resulting silk garments blend chic and freedom. Their exquisite informality allows the wearer to feel low profile while quietly basking in luxury.
The romance of these designs recalls the mid-century world of palazzo pajamas. Yet the F.R.S. interpretation is freer, sleeker, easier to mix in unexpected ways. For example, the oversize POIN Pajama Shirt in swoon-worthy pink floral/flamingo print is emphasized by dramatic kimono sleeves that suggest cocktails at Versailles. The option of a bandeau bra underneath offers a sexy beachy vibe. The coup might just be the skinny yet supple cigarette pants that bring to mind a young Marcello Mastroianni on the prowl.
Ruffini says that F.R.S. has allowed her to follow her dream, her “sogno.” She remembers her childhood of racing home from school in the afternoon and switching her uniform for pajamas. The feeling of play is alive in her grown-up version. And the special world of Como, where the garments are fabricated and sewn, adds a touch of magic.
